What are Porcelain Veneers?

Dental veneers are very thin porcelain covers that we put on top of your natural teeth. Dr. Ivan Ho uses porcelain veneers for correcting an array of cosmetic dental problems involving the shape, size, and color of damaged teeth. We use contemporary dental technology to design high-quality veneers that look exactly like your teeth – and give you lasting, healthy, and beautiful smiles.

What conditions can Porcelain Veneers correct?

Dental veneers were initially introduced as a cosmetic solution for masking permanent teeth stains, and for slight tooth reshaping. However, at Pro Smiles, we take smile enhancement to a whole new level by using the best porcelain veneers in  Orange County. Over the last 30 years, Dr. Ivan Ho has experimented with all types and styles of veneers, and he believes that porcelain veneers can fix virtually all cosmetic dental problems. Many of our patients call veneers the “Magical Smile Fix.” Here are a few cosmetic issues that porcelain veneers can fix in no time!

Crooked teeth – Dr. Ivan Ho was among the pioneering dentists in Orange County who started using dental veneers as a solution for fixing crooked or chipped teeth. Previously, the only option to correct misaligned teeth was metal braces. However, many patients objected to this treatment option due to their metallic appearance, inconvenience, and extended treatment time. Why wear braces for 18-24 months, when you can get your crooked teeth fixed in just two or three visits at Pro Smiles?

This patient had many crooked and misshapen teeth that were affecting her smile. As a part of her smile makeover, Dr. Ivan Ho reshaped her gums and restored the lower teeth with custom made porcelain veneers. After the veneers were attached, Dr. Ivan Ho performed teeth whitened to match the shade of the natural teeth with the new replacements – the result was a stunning and attractive smile.

Gaps between teeth – In the past, dentists used to fix excessive gaps between teeth with braces. Today, Pro Smiles Orange County offers veneers as a quick and simple solution for teeth gaps. Dr. Ivan Ho will design veneers that cover the gap between the teeth, reshaping the teeth so that the gaps between these are closed.

This patient came to Pro Smiles Orange County, having concerns about the gap between her front teeth. She also wanted to enhance the appearance of her front teeth. After a thorough clinical examination and discussion with the patient, Dr. Ivan Ho fixed her cosmetic defects with porcelain veneers, followed by teeth whitening to give her a pearly white smile and perfectly aligned teeth.

Teeth that are too small – Even a single tooth that is proportionately smaller than the rest can have a drastic effect on one’s smile and facial aesthetics. At Pro Smiles, we use porcelain veneers to adjust the size and shape of teeth that are too small in relation to the adjacent teeth. Many dentists do not attempt using veneers for reshaping or resizing a single tooth – as it requires artistic and clinical skills – to match the color and shape perfectly with the other teeth. However, Dr. Ivan Ho routinely performs such procedures with excellent aesthetic and functional outcomes.

This patient wanted a simple smile transformation to fix some of her teeth that were too small, and to address stains on her teeth. Dr. Ivan Ho placed three veneers to change the shape of the smaller teeth, and give her smile a full, natural effect. The entire procedure was completed in two visits.

Teeth that have been ground down – Many people grind their teeth, and over time their whole smile can be compromised. Dr. Ivan Ho can restore the teeth with veneers and provide custom mouthguards to prevent the effects of grinding.

This patient had several decayed teeth in the upper jaw as well as teeth that became worn down due to excessive grinding. Dr. Ivan Ho used Single-tooth implants to replace the severely worn teeth that could not be saved and then transformed his smile using veneers and cosmetic crowns.

Stained, discolored, or yellow teeth – Veneers are a permanent solution for teeth that have become stained due to tetracycline, coffee or smoking, and even teeth that have yellowed with age. And the best part is – the veneers themselves do not stain and will continue to look beautiful over the years.

This patient’s teeth had become yellow with age, making her look several years older than she was. Dr. Ivan Ho replaced her upper and lower teeth with a series of porcelain veneers to give her a natural, beautiful look and shaved about ten years off of her appearance.

Misshapen teeth – Teeth tend to change their shape over time. An essential aspect of a perfect smile is that the teeth should be perfectly shaped and aligned. If you have a single tooth that is misshapen, it can have a drastic effect on your smile. Custom porcelain veneers at Pro Smiles Orange County are a perfect solution to correct this aesthetic problem.

This patient – in her late fifties – was very self-conscious about her misshapen and stained teeth that were ruining her smile. Her husband has passed away recently, and she wanted to enjoy life again, but here crooked teeth were holding her back. She wanted a complete smile makeover that made her charming and attractive – and she wanted quick results. In just two appointments, Dr. Ivan Ho completely transformed her smile – treating the underlying gum disease, fixing her crooked teeth by placing the finest quality, custom made veneers and crowns on her upper and lower arch. Finally, Dr. Ivan Ho performed teeth whitening to give her a dazzling, pearly white smile.

What are the advantages of Porcelain Veneers compared to other types of dental work?

When it comes to cosmetic dental restoration, there are many options; from teeth whitening to bonding and from porcelain crowns to veneers and lumineers. Dr. Ivan Ho, an award-winning dentist in Orange County, has mastered the smile makeover technique with porcelain veneers that give perfect results for all kinds of cosmetic problems.

At Dr. Ivan Ho’s offices, we come across three common cosmetic issues: a) stained teeth, b) crooked teeth c) chipped, gapped, or fracture teeth – and we have a single solution for all of them; porcelain veneers.

Dental Veneers vs. Teeth Whitening – Professional tooth whitening is among the most popular cosmetic services we offer at Pro Smiles. We use the globally acclaimed Zoom! Teeth whitening system that can whiten your teeth by up to eight shades in a single visit.

However, some teeth stains are permanent; and they cannot be removed with teeth whitening. For example, teeth stains that develop when tetracycline is given to infants during tooth development years are permanent – and they cannot be removed entirely with teeth whitening. But we have a solution for permanently stained teeth as well; Dr. Ivan Ho masks these stains by using porcelain veneers – giving you a brand new, dazzling white smile. The best thing about porcelain veneers is that they are resistant to staining – so you can enjoy a lasting pearly white smile.

Dental Veneers vs. Dental Bonding – At Pro Smiles Orange County, some patients elect to have dental bonding fix flawed, chipped or fractured teeth – and even to close gaps or fix misshapen teeth. Despite their excellent aesthetics, there are two issues with dental bonding that make them less suitable for a cosmetic smile makeover: durability and quality.

A bonded composite filling usually lasts 3-5 years, before it starts to stain and wear away. Naturally, higher quality bonded fillings tend to last longer – but they are still not as durable as the Porcelain Veneers. Similarly, the quality of dental bonding also depends on the skill of the dentist – and bonded fillings cannot match the exact color and shade of natural teeth – the way porcelain veneers blend in perfectly and become virtually indistinguishable.

Dr. Ivan Ho designs Porcelain veneers from the finest quality porcelain that can last 15 years or longer – provided they are looked after properly. So, when it comes to giving you a lasting smile makeover, Dr. Ivan Ho prefers porcelain veneers and crowns.

Porcelain Veneers vs. Braces – Dental braces are the ideal treatment option for fixing misaligned or crooked teeth. But the main issue with braces is the time – patients do not want to brace 1-2 years to get the teeth in place; they need quick solutions. Veneers are a permanent fix that can be applied in two visits. At Dr. Ivan Ho’s office, if you come in for a smile makeover on Monday you can walk away with a flawless smile by Friday. While veneers may be more expensive than braces, the results are longer lasting and aesthetically pleasant; more importantly, the smile makeover can be accomplished in a fraction of the time.

What is the process like for getting Porcelain Veneers?

At Pro Smiles Orange County, the process of getting veneers is usually completed in two visits.

During the first appointment, Dr. Ivan Ho will take photographs of your teeth. He will also make impressions of your teeth to prepare study models and digitize them using special software. Using the pictures and digital tooth models, Dr. Ivan Ho will identify your cosmetic problem, and then design images of what your new smile will look like.

Depending on your treatment plan, Dr. Ivan Ho will prepare your teeth to attach new veneers. While your new veneers are being made in the laboratory, we will place temporary veneers on the prepared teeth, so that you have experienced them for a few days. This allows you to experience how your teeth will look like after the makeover – so that you can be sure that it’s precisely what you want. Your first visit may take anywhere from one to four hours – depending on how many teeth need veneers.

We will call you for a second visit when we receive your veneers back from the lab. Dr. Ivan Ho will first place the veneers on your teeth and assess their fit and aesthetics without bonding them. Any minor adjustments, if required, can be done at the chairside. After making sure that you’re comfortable with your new veneers, and your smile is exactly how you want it, Dr. Ivan will permanently bond the veneers to your teeth. The second appointment may take anywhere between two to three hours.

At Pro Smiles Orange County, we use a high-end dental lab that caters to our high standards. As a result, smile makeover procedures that we start on a Monday can be completed on a Friday – including the time required for attaching the permanent veneers or crowns. We have a very experienced and caring team that strives to ensure patient comfort, as well as quality and speed of service–all so that we can accommodate patients who need to get their work done quickly–without any compromise on quality.

How many Dental Veneers do I need?

A smile makeover with porcelain veneers is successful when they blend in perfectly with the natural teeth. And this is also the secret behind the success of our doctor’s signature Smile Makeover – he puts in a lot of effort in having the veneers color-matched exactly to your remaining teeth.

But color-matching can be a challenging process that requires an artistic eye. Therefore, many dentists prefer to use a shortcut – they give a set of 6 or 8 veneers to their patients, rather than matching two or three veneers that are needed to fix the cosmetic defect.

Dr. Ivan Ho does not believe in unnecessarily cutting down healthy teeth just so that smile makeover becomes easier. Unlike other practitioners, he will carefully design your treatment plan to only involve the teeth that have aesthetic defects. Before placing the veneers, He will also perform professional teeth whitening to remove stains from the natural teeth – so that the result is a sparkling white smile.

Are all Porcelain Veneers the same in Orange County?

The short answer, according to Dr. Ivan Ho, is; no, they are not. Different veneers can produce very different aesthetic results for a patient.

Veneers are made by many different manufacturers and have different compositions, shapes, and thicknesses – just like each patient has teeth with different colors, shapes, and sizes. Therefore, it is not suitable to use a single veneer type for all patients

With more than three decades of cosmetic dentistry experience, he knows which porcelain veneer materials are going to give the best aesthetic results for each patient. But, it’s not just about the materials – a fabulous smile makeover also requires excellent cosmetic dental and artistic skills. Dr. Ivan Ho carefully customizes the design, shape, and size of the veneers so that their new smile is exactly how they want it to look.

Let’s look at an example. When teeth become recessed, they fail to provide sufficient support to the face, causing the lip and face muscles to “sink in.” To fix this problem, he will design thicker veneers to enhance support for the facial muscles – making the patient’s teeth look younger and prettier. Other cosmetic tooth problems usually require very thin veneers to restore the smile and facial aesthetics.

During your free consultation appointment, Dr. Ivan Ho will determine whether you need one or several different types of veneer to complete your smile. After looking at the x-ray images and digital impressions of your teeth, he will then decide porcelain material that offers the best aesthetics and durability. Using his exclusive lab and in-house dental technician, he will ensure to color match your veneers so that they blend perfectly with your natural teeth.

How durable are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are incredibly durable, provided they are designed by an experienced cosmetic dentist and made in a top dental laboratory. They allow you to eat, drink, speak, and brush normally – just like your natural teeth. Dr. Ivan Ho has prepared tens of thousands of veneers for his patients that have lasted for more than a decade. According to him, veneers can last for more than 15 years if they are looked after properly.

Another beneficial feature of the veneers is that while they resemble tooth enamel, they do not discolor easily. Therefore, they retain their beautiful color and shade for a long time.

What about “prepless veneers” or Lumineers? Can I get those?

“Prepless veneers,” as their name suggests, require minimal tooth preparation. Being similar to veneers, prepless veneers, also called the lumineers are glued to the teeth. However, since they are very thin – about the same thickness as a contact lense – they can be attached without requiring considerable tooth shaping or preparation.

Unlike porcelain veneers, Dr. Ivan Ho uses prepless veneers to correct only a few aesthetic problems. For example, to fix the smile of a patient who has an otherwise perfectly shaped tooth that has undergone a slight recession. Similarly, Lumineers are also suitable for patients who are not willing to sacrifice a healthy tooth structure for getting veneers.

Lumineers offer excellent aesthetics for restoring damaged teeth. Another beneficial feature of the Lumineers is that they are a completely reversible treatment option – you can get them removed anytime, without causing any damage to the underlying enamel. However, to provide a naturally pleasant and long-lasting smile to his patients, Dr. Ivan Ho usually prefers other types of porcelain veneers over the Lumineers – using them only when they are suitable.

If I get Porcelain Veneers, how long will it take?

Most dentists take anywhere between two to three weeks to complete a smile makeover. However, award-winning Orange County Dentist, Dr. Ivan Ho, understands that patients want quick results. Therefore, he has developed a smile makeover technique with porcelain veneers that allows you to get your dream smile in less than seven days. If you walk-in to our office for your first smile makeover appointment on a Monday, he will have your dental work completed and your permanent veneers bonded by Friday. This kind of speed is only possible with Dr. Ivan Ho’s 30 years of cosmetic dentistry experience and skill – combined with our exclusive laboratory and our highly qualified and trained in-house lab technicians.

Does Dr. Ivan Ho do anything unique in his office when placing veneers?

Fabrication and placement of the veneers is a common procedure – Dentists prepare hundreds of veneers each day for fixing flawed smiles. But what’s so special about Dr. Ivan Ho’s signature smile makeover with veneers that makes him the top cosmetic dentist in Orange County? Dr. Ivan Ho reveals that the secret behind his successful and famous technique is his clinical skills, use of quality materials, and attention to detail.

Dr. Ivan Ho explains that when he looks at your smile, he isn’t just looking at your teeth. He is looking at your facial profile, the fullness of your lips, your jaws, and how your teeth and shape your smile and facial appearance. A smile transformation from Dr. Ivan Ho is much more than just tooth reshaping – he calls it a “dental facelift.”

As people get older, their jawbone starts to wear away, and teeth move backward. As a result, the support provided by the teeth that make them appear fuller is lost – and the lips do not look as full as they once were or as full as they once were. Due to wear, the teeth appear shorter in size, resulting in a “deep bite” that is evident in the form of wrinkles around the corner of the mouth.

All these conditions can add many years to your smile. But the good news is that all these conditions can be enhanced with a “dental facelift”. By placing custom made veneers, Dr. Ivan Ho adjusts the length, shape, and thickness of your teeth to perfectly complement the face – making the lips appear larger and fuller, and making you look much younger. In fact, his innovative dental facelift approach can make a person look five to ten years younger. No need to get plastic surgery when you can look more youthful with a smile makeover.

Can Porcelain Veneers be an alternative to braces?

The simple answer is “yes and no.” Braces are designed to move your teeth into place and correct bite and jaw problems. They are basically used for treating the underlying issues that cause the aesthetic facial defects, such as an underbite, a deep bite, or a crossbite. Veneers, on the other hand, are used for cosmetically fixing a variety of dental and facial defects. However, certain complex orthodontic and cosmetic problems can only be treated with braces.

In modern dentistry, porcelain veneers, dental crowns, and dental implants offer a much faster and lasting alternative to braces for fixing crooked and misaligned teeth. Dr. Ivan Ho routinely performs smile makeover procedures that help patients get their dream smiles in less than seven days.
